For most linear oligomerization of n-butenes to octenes, Ni-based catalysts are used. To gain further insight into the interaction of acidic support and Ni species, variably treated amorphous aluminosilicate samples were characterized by a combination of TPAD and IR spectroscopy, 27Al-MAS-NMR spectroscopy, and XPS measurement. For catalytic testing, particles were inserted into a loop-type reactor and the pure acidic conversion of n-butenes was analyzed at different temperatures. After approximately 100 h time on stream, each sample was impregnated in situ with nickelocene in heptane and the changes in conversion and product distribution were measured (see figure). Additionally, the interaction between nickelocene and aluminosilicate was investigated after reaction using the aforementioned spectroscopic methods. Merging information from catalytic and spectroscopic data indicated different interactions of nickel with Lewis and Brønsted acid sites of the support material.
