In this talk, I will examine recent progress in the measurement of bond dissociation energies of the lanthanides and actinides and the comparison of this thermochemistry with advanced theoretical methods designed to address the complex issues of spin-orbit coupling and relativistic effects in these heavy elements. Time permitting, experimental work on the fragmentation energetics of protonated peptides and the comparison to theoretically evaluated reaction mechanisms will also be discussed. In both cases, the experimental work is performed using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry, which allows the kinetic energy dependence of the absolute cross sections for reactions to be examined over an extended energy range. Analysis of the cross sections permits the evaluation of bond energies and transition state barriers that can be directly compared with computational values.<br/>
