Sewage sludge, as solid waste, has potential to produce hydrogen in the presence of sodium hydroxide. Mass ratio of sludge and sodium hydroxide, heating rate and final temperature were varied to explore the effects on the production of hydrogen. In the process of hydrogen production, the effect on the hydrogen production is not positive as the mass ratio of sodium hydroxide to sludge increases. Different heating rate caused different diagram of hydrogen generation rate. The diagram of the instantaneous yield of hydrogen with respect to the time became narrower as the heating rate increases. Total production of hydrogen increases with the increase of the final temperature. The optimal condition has been confirmed as: mass ratio of sludge and sodium oxide is 1:3, heating rate is 10 centigrade per minute, final temperature is 500 centigrade, and the maximum production of hydrogen is about 250 ml per gram sludge. Under the optimal condition, peaks of sodium hydroxide from XRD test are hardly observed, while peaks of sodium carbonate are apparent, which suggests that part of sodium hydroxide act as sorbent of carbon dioxide.
