Identification of transient photo-chemical species remains a great challenge for time-resolved spectroscopy, as electronic, spin and structural degrees of freedom often result in overlapping and inseparable spectral responses. In this work we demonstrate how the information content of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) gives an edge over one-dimensional correspondents: x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy. Through combination of excited-state selective anti-Stokes RIXS and inversion-symmetry separation of electronic state manifolds, we show from multi-configurational spectrum simulations how the spectral fingerprints in RIXS are sufficient to separate the possible electronic, spin and structural species with involvement in the charge-transfer decay dynamics of photo-excited Ferricyanide in solution.
