Since the advent of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS), multiple means to promote analyte ionization have appeared in the literature, starting with the small organic acids from Karas & Hillenkamp, and the ultrafine cobalt suspended in glycerol from Tanaka et al. Recently, a focus on materials that do not provide a true matrix for analytes, such as nanoparticles (NPs), have been of interest. This work expands on previous biomolecule studies and introduces carbohydrates, steroids, and other small molecules as a focus. Specifically of interest are new ionization species that were observed (e.g., [M+Au]+) and have not previously been reported. Interesting fragmentation effects akin to Electron Impact ionization have been observed for diphenhydramine and a variety of steroids without the need for tandem mass spectrometry.
