In the Boika group, we are developing analytical methodologies centered on the use of alternating current (ac) polarized microelectrodes. Application of a high frequency (~ 100 MHz) ac waveform between a working and a counter electrode leads to the resistive heating of an electrolyte solution, as well as the onset of such electrokinetic phenomena as dielectrophoresis (DEP) and electrothermal fluid flow (ETF). We harvest these phenomena to improve the detection of metal nanoparticles (Ag, Pt), as well as <i>E. coli</i> bacteria decorated with Ag NPs. Besides this, such hot microelectrodes have been used as tips for scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to distinguish substrate materials based on their thermal conductivities. In this presentation, most recent developments in the above research areas will be discussed.
