Building off early work with motexafin gadolinium, a specific gadolinium texaphyrin, new conjugates that permit the targeting of tumors and which carry an active payload have been developed. An update on this progress will be presented. New efforts wherein a variety of other active agents are targeted to cancers, often with controlled release mechanisms, will also be summarized. MR imaging, as well as fluorescence-based sensing approaches are being exploited and these too will be discussed. Potential treatment protocols based on light activation, as well as, or as alternatives to active payloads are being explored and will be presented as appropriate. In all cases, the supramolecular targeting aspects of the work will be highlighted.<br/>This work has benefited from support from the National Cancer Institute and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.
