The conceptual designing for directing highly ordered mesoporous zeolite is a challenge in material science. We introduced a concept for designing single-quaternary ammonium-head amphiphilic template with strong ordered self-assembling ability through π-π stacking in hydrophobic side, which stabilises the mesostructure to form single crystalline architecture with mesostructured zeolite nanosheets. The concept was demonstrated for the formation of a new type mesoporous zeolite join with 90° rotational boundary by the designed templates with bi-quaternary ammonium head, which resulted in a highly ordered two-dimensional mesoporous zeolite with highly specific surface area even after calcination. A single-crystalline mesoporous ZSM-5 with three dimensional sheet-like mesopores, which possess not only a-c plane but also abundant b-c and a-b planes, was produced by using a triply branched template with bi-quaternary ammonium head. Low binding energies for this self-assembling system were supported by a theoretical analysis. Geometrically match between the arrangement of aromatic groups and the zeolitic framework was speculated for the formation of mesoporous zeolites. By introducing azobenzene group into the hydrophobic part of the amphiphilic surfactant, cylindrical-assembly-units was generated by the characteristic of azobenzene segment, which directed the ordered mesoporous MFI zeolite with an 2D-square p4mm mesostructure. Lamellar mesostructured ZSM-48 nanosheets were synthesised using an amphiphilic template consisting of six tertiary amine-terminated alkyl chain branches bonded to one benzophenanthrene hydrophobic centre.
