Science is probably the only field that contributes to the quality and longevity of life, but also has the ability to cut life short. Scientists are in a very special position compared to other professions. They have the responsibility to use their science and their status in society for the betterment of humankind. This objective can be achieved by using science diplomacy to create bridges among nations where other forms of diplomacy have failed. In 1980, science diplomacy was used to develop scientific collaborations between Israel and Egypt, two nations which had signed a peace agreement, but had no contact with each other. In the 1980’s, chemistry education as a common subject improved understanding between scientists from the US and the Soviet Union during a period when tensions between the governments were extremely high. Beginning in 1998, US and Cuban chemists were able to develop an ongoing relationship after ACS delegations, mainly of chemical educators, travelled several times to Cuban Chemical Society conferences. This is another example of how science diplomacy and chemistry education helped build a bridge between two nations with no diplomatic relations. Following the 9/11 attack on the US, science diplomacy efforts were directed towards the Middle East to overcome cultural, political, and religious barriers to help prevent acts of war and terrorism. A forum was established for scientists from 16 Middle East countries to meet face-to-face and collaboratively tackle some of the region’s most challenging scientific problems: inadequate education, water scarcity, and environmental degradation. An uneducated and thirsty young person has nothing to lose by becoming a terrorist. Science diplomacy can change this situation by providing education and clean drinking water through collaborations among nations whose governments are hostile to one another. Breaking down barriers that limit cooperation is a crucial next step.
