Sea buckthorn is one of the most important shrubs grown widely in China. It has been traditionally used as a nature remedy to reduce the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, and cancer. The present study was to investigate the effect of sea buckthorn seed oil and fruit oil on plasma cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia hamsters. The seven diets were prepared, namely a non-cholesterol control diet (NCD), a high-cholesterol control diet (HCD) with lard oil, a HCD negative diet with addition of 0.5% cholestyramine, a HCD diet with sea buckthorn seed oil in replacement 50% of lard (SL), a HCD diet with sea buckthorn seed oil in replacement of 100% of lard (SH), a HCD diet with sea buckthorn fruit oil in replacement of 50% of lard (FL), and a HCD diet with sea buckthorn fruit oil in replacement of 100% of lard (FH). Fifty-six hamsters were divided into seven groups fed one of the seven diets for six weeks. Results showed SL and SH diets reduced plasma total cholesterol by 21.8% and 20%, respectively, while FL and FH diets did not show a significant effect on plasma total cholesterol compared with HCD. The present study suggested sea buckthorn seed oil was effective in reducing plasma cholesterol while its fruit oil had no effect.<br/> <br/>
