The Sievers M9 SEC DOC Detector, a modified TOC Analyzer, has been designed to detect aromatic and nonaromatic fraction of organic matter as a function of molecular weight. Knowing TOC, Total Organic Carbon, can be very useful to control water treatment processes to protect assets and water quality as well as comply with regulations around disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The M9 SEC DOC Detector provides a simple method to obtain more information about what size fractions make up the total organics picture. It can be applied to characterize the nature and changes of source water and used to correlate size fraction to specifics sizes of contaminants. This information can help tailor treatment processes, troubleshoot when problems arise, and predict system performance.<br/><br/>The M9 SEC system operates with a HPLC SEC system with UVA and DOC detectors to provide a better understanding of natural organic matter (NOM). The HPLC drives the sample and resulting UVA and DOC chromatographs illustration the concentration of different molecular weight species. This system provides an inexpensive and simple way to gain insight into what organics make up a water sample. Chromatography results can be used for investigating water treatment processes and efficiencies. For example, a reclamation facility in Southern California analyzes how the organics change throughout the multiple treatment stages. In addition, quantifying these organic fractions has been used to optimize various water treatment processes as certain molecular weight organics have the potential to foul membranes or convert preferentially to DBPs after chlorination in drinking water. Knowing the amounts of each size fraction of organics can help operators better understand how source water changes through the year and how to tailor treatment processes accordingly to meet effluent quality goals.
