Quinoidic thiophenes are known as low band gap, multiple redox state systems with unique electronic properties. They are used as model compounds for the description of the conversion from aromatic to quinoidic polaron or bipolaron states in polythiophenes. Additionally their biradicaloid nature raised attention to experimental and theoretical chemists.<br/>By introduction of a third redox center perpendicular to the quinoidic system, additional radical and ionic states can be realized. Switching between these states by careful addition of redox agents or acid and bases provides discrete, characterizable and colored states. A combined experimental and theoretical approach is employed to investigate the radicaloid nature of the neutral molecule and its ground and excited states.
