The last few years have seen tremendous growth in the introduction of green practices within Medicinal Chemistry in the Pharma industry, brought about by the introduction of new computations tools, technologies, catalyst systems, reactions and purification systems. Discovery chemists are also applying the learnings of our Process Chemistry colleagues to more and more diverse chemistries and scaffolds. Finally, new chemists are joining our ranks with a stronger understanding of and commitment to what it means to be green. In “greening” of our field, we are focusing on an approach of “fewer, better” molecules, reduced waste and hazardous waste streams, limiting and replacing rare earth metals and increasing applicability of medicinal chemistry routes for process chemistry delivery. Strategies used within the Genentech Discovery Chemistry organization to influence areas as broad as solvent selection to CRO management to purification strategies as well as lessons learned from working with the medicinal chemistry community as a whole will be discussed.
