Reduction of FeO(111) can be controlled by choosing different types of hydrocarbons and temperature. Reduction by methane only happens at high temperature and produces a porous film. Ethylene transforms FeO(111) into different iron islands at low temperature, but at high temperature forms aromatic compounds adsorbs at the Ru-Fe surface. By prolonging the annealing time, these aromatic compounds gradually grow a graphene layer on Ru-Fe alloy surface.
