As one promising carbon material, mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs) have attracted much attention for its excellent property and application potential in many advanced technologies and area.<br/>Lots of work efforts hashave been done devoted to prepare MCMBs with uniform diameter and well good morphology, . The improvementthe upgrading of feedstock through pre-upgrading process was studied extensively. Among all the reported methods, supercritical fluid extraction process is highlighted by its high variability. The solubility of supercritical fluid can be adjusted conveniently by changing the system pressure or temperature.<br/>Our group developed supercritical fluid extraction fractionation (SFEF) process decades ago, . Iin this study, SFEFit was used to separate a kind of low temperature coal tar pitch (CTP) in to a set of sub-fractions. The property of raw material and sub-fractions were analyzed, revealing that high extraction pressure generated heavier sub-fractions extracted at high pressure, thus possess have higher condensation degree and aromaticity. And it is noteworthy that mostMost of the toluene insoluble fractions components were concentrated in end-cut.<br/>Then aA series of carbonization reaction were then performed for raw material and its sub-fractions, was done under the condition in the range of 370-450 °C, 0.7 MPa and 1-6 hours. By comparing analyzing the carbonization product, it is we found that MCMBs from SFEF sub-fractions showedwere of better morphology and well dispersedcomparing to feedstock. Moreover, it’s noteworthy that for the unextractable end-cut the coarse mosaic type bulk mesophase was the only product.<br/>Clearly, SFEF process is an effective method to optimize enhance MCMBs preparation, which could be explained by narrowing the property distribution range and making the reaction more synchronized. Besides, the influence of toluene insoluble fractions played an important controlling role in the reaction based on the comparision between carbonization results of end-cut and other sub-fractions, which might be neglected in the previous researchstudies.
