This talk will explore the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions of small organic molecules with a variety of phospholipid monolayers and bilayers. Fluorescence microscopy, pH modulation sensing, pressure-area diagram measurements as well as vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy measurements were made to examine the mechanistic details of binding. It should be noted that detecting small molecule interactions at the water/lipid membrane interface has been a particular challenge when the target analyte is not labeled.  This challenge can be overcome, however, by embedding dye molecules at the interface that sense changes in interfacial potential with high sensitivity. By combining binding isotherm data with complementary spectroscopic measurements, the mechanistic details of these interactions can be obtained. Moreover, the differences in binding with lipid chemistry can be quite significant.  <br/>
