The majority of the annual production of 60 million tons of elemental sulfur comes from hydrodesulfurization process in petroleum refining. Existing applications consume a limited amount of elemental sulfur. As a result, surplus elemental sulfur is piled in massive above-ground deposits. Development of new chemistry to convert elemental sulfur into useful and economic polymer materials would greatly increase its demand. On the other hand, materials with high sulfur content may find various applications.
