The synthesis, structure, properties, and potential applications of a novel inorganic material, hydrogen ferric manganic sulfate (HFMS) [H5O2Fe1–xMnx(SO4)2(H2O)2], will be presented. A microwave-assisted green synthesis of HFMS was achieved using only MnO2, Fe2O3, and H2SO4. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry identified the compound as a mixed Fe(III) and Mn(III) sulfate material that crystallizes in a lattice containing alternating layers of Fe1–xMnx(SO4)2(H2O)2 anions and H5O2 cations. In addition to its layered structure, the positive potentials of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Mn(III)/Mn(II) redox couples make HFMS a desirable precursor for the synthesis of cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion, Na-ion, or Mg-ion batteries. Furthermore, hydrogen bonding observed in the structure of HFMS stabilizes water molecules between the inorganic layers, which presents an opportunity to determine mechanistic information of OER catalysis with atomic-level structural detail.
