The conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons is usually carried out at temperatures above 500 oC and high pressures or it required multiple reaction steps. In fact, until now the conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons using chlorine or bromine as the oxidant was achieved at least in two separate steps. We have developed a protocol for the direct conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons by reacting methane with chlorine or bromine at relatively low temperature, ~375 oC, and near atmospheric pressure over H-SAPO-34 as catalyst. While ethene and propene were obtained as the major products, C4+ hydrocarbons were also observed. This direct catalytic upgrading of methane to higher hydrocarbons at lower temperature and near ambient pressure has great significance and potential for future industrial applications using cheap natural/shale gas.
