Photonic Crystals are orderly structures that possess periodic arrangements of two kinds of dielectric constant (or refractive index) materials. Silk, famous for its usage in clothing since ancient China, has some special characteristic and has been found many new usages in biochemistry and photonics. In this paper, a one-dimensional photonic crystal sensor made of silk fibroin (SF) and titanate (TiO2) was prepared by a spin-coating method. By controlling spin coating time, spinning speed and the mass concentration of the silk fibroin solution, various photonic band gap SF/TiO2 one-dimensional photonic crystal films were fabricated with different colors. The structural characteristics and photonic bandgaps of these films were studied. These SF/TiO2 films responded differently to temperature, organic solvents, pH values and the nature of cations and anions present. In particular, Pb2+, Hg2+ and CO32- ions produce a particularly noticeable response to the photonic bandgap reflectance on these sensors.
