The chloride ion concentration is sweat is a biomarker for electrolyte loss and for diseases such as cystic fibrosis and electrolyte metabolism disorders. Current methods for measurement of sweat chloride rely on collection of a sweat sample following sweat induction, and measurement in an analytical laboratory. The ability to make real-time measurements of sweat chloride has highlighted several important questions and opportunities for clinical practice and research. We have developed a wearable, thin film chloride ion sensor and here we report results of trials on healthy subjects while exercising, and show how sweat chloride is dependent on physiological parameters associated with exercise. We also describe a clinical trial of cystic fibrosis patients where we compare sensor measurements to standard clinical practice, which involves pilocarpine iontophoresis, sweat collection, and laboratory analysis.
