The reduction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen are two paramount processes that continue to elicit intensive research efforts towards robust catalysts. Nickel based catalysts are among the few that demonstrate competitive and selective reduction of CO2 to CO in aqueous media, though mechanistic details for this behavior are insufficiently understood. Here we present a nickel pyridine-oxazoline complex that behaves as a bifunctional catalyst for the photo and electro-catalytic reduction of CO2 as well as the reduction of protons in an organic and mixed organic aqueous media. We also report an electrochemical kinetic isotope effect analysis combined with spectroscopic and DFT studies to unravel the mechanistic intricacies of both the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic reduction processes.
