The development of efficient and stable solid amines for CO2 capture is urgent for global CO2 reduction. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) are a promising material for meeting these goals. Under dry conditions, CO2 capture is dependent on PEI structure yielding a 15% higher capture on branched polymer compared to linear for physically coated PEI supported on CNT. Despite the lower CO2 capture, desorption temperatures for complete CO2 removal were noticeably lower for linear PEI versus branched PEI. In order to improve the stability of the adsorbent to steam, covalently bonded BPEI modified CNT are synthesized via the amination of acylated CNT. The increase in branched PEI adhesion maintains a high CO2 capture efficiency compared to dry conditions. The chemical properties of the polymeric amine and surface chemistry of the support are also demonstrated to be stable to steam. These results indicate that supported amine materials with high stability can be achieved through the use of carbon-based materials.
