In the quest to feed an estimated 9 billion people by 2050, improved crop protection technologies will play a critical role. Continued focus on highly selective, low use-rate active ingredients has resulted in targeting of ever more complex structures in agricultural products. We report the synthesis of a library of complex, natural-product inspired 9- and 10-membered carbocyclic lactones containing four stereocenters, three of which are contiguous. Two core construction methods are compared which highlight differences in 9 versus 10-membered ring closure via ring-closing metathesis or macrolactonization.
