Fuel cells represent a very important clean energy vector to address the increasing demand of clean energy and the limited source of fossil fuels. The commercialization of fuel cells is largely hindered by lacking low-cost and high-activity electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The ability to tune the composition and structure of ternary nanocatalysts is a challenge in design and preparation of low-cost and active catalysts for fuel cell reactions. PtPdCu catalysts with tunable ternary compositions are synthesized and characterized. One focus is the understanding of the role of copper in the catalytic synergy and the composition-structure-activity correlation, which is aided by electrochemical experiments, high-energy X-ray diffraction (HE-XRD) coupled with atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. New insights into the catalytic strategy for the design, preparation, and processing of highly-active nanoalloy catalysts will also be discussed.
