Antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed medication to children. Over 20% of outpatient visits result in antibiotic chemotherapy, accounting for approximately 50 million prescriptions in the United States. Remarkably, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated 30% of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, primarily prescribed to treat viral infections. Their mis- and overuse promotes resistance evolution across species and is a primary cause of microbiome dysbiosis. This talk will focus on our investigation of the role human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) play in microbial communities using an interdisciplinary approach comprised of synthetic organic chemistry, microbiology, and proteomics.
