This presentation will address the most current advances made worldwide, across multiple disciplines, in the use of electrocoagulation as an emergent treatment technology. Publication statistics, case study data, and other industry data from the last 12 years will be used to provide context to this seemingly complex and somewhat misunderstood technology. The major breakthroughs in theory and practice with both iron and aluminum as sacrificial anodes will be highlighted. An emphasis area will the the applications of "green" technologies as the power source to allow ease of use in remote and austere environments. A "holistic approach" considering sustainable energy reuse options for the hydrogen gas formed at the cathodes will also be presented. Comparisons to existing conventional treatment options for drinking water and wastewater will illustrate the wide scope and promise for the continued growth of the electrocoagulation technology. I will share my personal experiences applying this novel technology to laboratory experiments at the undergraduate level at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and at the Virginia Military Institute (current position). I will conclude with a proposed recommended priority for future research efforts to better synchronize complementary work performed in related science and engineering fields.
