Arthur Obermayer, was a consummate gentleman, with a lifetime of achievement, innovation, political finesse, serial entrepreneurship and vision who ennobled others by his very presence. He played a stellar role in delineating and implementing two programs- The Bayh-Dole Patent Act and the SBIR Program, that have had a profound effect, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to these, almost all pharmaceutical research was done in laboratories of the major pharmaceutical companies. Today, much of the best pharmaceutical research is done at universities and small businesses, under government grants because they retain title to patents which can have great commercial value. Often a small business is started or expanded using SBIR funds to demonstrate the feasibility of the research. Art exemplified and epitomized ways a scientist can have opportunities to do exciting, important and creative work outside of the lab. Presented herein is my sincerest tribute to this “Prince” amongst men.<br/>
