The natural world inspires us all; from artist and philosopher to biologist and chemist alike. In our quest for new knowledge, the exquisite and varied architectures of natural products provide a rich pallet for discovery. Whether these are used to probe biological mechanisms, or to provide the basis for pharmaceutical drug discovery, natural products continue to command attention. For many of these reasons synthesis chemists are drawn to these structures as testing grounds for synthetic strategies and for the discovery of new methods. By examining several synthesis programs, we will see how the challenges these structures present can be met by new opportunities that inspire discovery in terms of novel methods or new tools. In particular, new enabling technologies, such as flow chemistry, can overcome many traditional issues associated with complex molecule assembly and help deliver more sustainable chemical processes.
