Nanomaterials possess large surface area and superior physical properties, which render them not only great scientific interest, but also tremendous industrial applications. However, their strong tendency to form large-scale aggregates extremely hinders the practical applications of nanomaterials. Aqueous and solvent phase nanoparticle dispersions have been enormously studied because of the ease of manipulating their surface features, thus forming stable colloidal dispersions. However, the dispersion of nanomaterials into oils and polymers remains challenging. In this presentation, our recent developments for dispersing 2D layered nanomaterials, including zirconium phosphate nanoplatelets and graphite fluoride, into oils and polymers will be introduced. The corresponding nanolubricating oils and reinforced polymer nanocomposites exhibit superior anti-wear properties, thus fulfill many engineering needs for high-performance lubrication and light-weight structure materials.
