The final frontier for energy density in closed electrochemical energy density is the taming and exploitation of the most reducing compound currently known to man, the lithium metal anode. While all electrodeposited structures have a rate-morphology relationship that must be navigated, lithium metal adds an extra challenge in that it attempts to react with any interface it shares. Recently we have noticed that under certain conditions lithium metal will electrodeposit in a fashion that forms columnar crystals on the order of 200 nm.
