Because fluorinated compounds have shown to be biologically active, the interests in fluorination pathways have increased. However, traditional fluorinating methods require the use of highly toxic chemicals and fairly harsh conditions. Many of these traditional fluorination methods also have limited substrate scopes. We have developed a mild method to perform radical fluorination in the presence of a Lewis basic nitrogen species. We have experimental data to suggest that the successful fluorination is due to halogen bonding, which promotes the electron-transfer required for radical initiation.
