The ability to tune not only the composition but also the morphology of Pt-based alloyed nanoparticles is essential for the design of highly active and stable catalysts. This report describes the synthesis of Pt-alloy nanoparticles (e.g., PtAu, PtPd, etc.) with composition-tunable chain-like structures and the determination of their enhanced electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition to the alloy structure, the nanoparticles are shown to exhibit particle-chain morphology. The nanoparticle chains are composition-tunable, exhibiting intriguing morphological correlation with the chemical nature of the metals. For example, PtPd nanoparticles forms triangle nanoparticle chains, whereas PtAu nanoparticles form spherical nanoparticle chains. This type of alloy composition dependent nanoparticle chains exhibits dual morphological characteristics, which are examined as catalysts for ORR.
