Xenon-encapsulating motifs have the potential to be used as molecular imaging agents for hyperpolarized xenon-129 MRI. We have recently disclosed the first example of a pseudorotaxane that is capable of forming a ternary complex with xenon. This supramolecular complex produces HyperCEST signals comparable to cryptophanes and cucurbit[6]urils, the most widely-used macrocycles for xenon-129 MRI. Importantly, multi-gram quantities of the pseudorotaxane can be synthesized in excellent yields in a single day. This presentation will discuss our development of this and other molecular structures that can be easily synthesized and functionalized for use as molecular imaging agents for hyperpolarized xenon-129 MRI.
