Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are emerging as the energy storage device of choice for portable electronic devices and large-scale applications such as electric vehicles. Among all the cathode materials available for LIBs, LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) shows superior properties for high voltage applications with a voltage of 4.75 vs Li/Li+ and a theoretical capacity of 147 mAh/g. In this study, we used phosphoric acid (PA) modified LNMO electrodes and lithium bis-(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive separately and together to investigate the cell performance. The results indicate that the PA modification significantly improves the cycling performance of cells with a LNMO cathode and a graphite anode, which is further enhanced by the addition of LiBOB to the electrolyte. The ICP-MS studies performed on anode materials extracted from cycled cells reveal comparatively low levels of transition metals deposited on the anode for PA modified LNMO or cells containing LiBOB. The improved electrochemical performance correlated with the reduction in transition metal dissolution. The surface analytical techniques FTIR and XPS have also been performed to further understand the performance improvements.
