Biocatalytic materials are a category of materials that achieve functionality through the integration of enzymes.  These materials are associated with immobilized enzyme technologies used in bioprocessing, cell-free metabolic engineering, and biosensor applications.  Classical methods of enzyme immobilization can be limited by reproducibility, cost, stability, activity retention, and ease-of-use.  Advances in molecular biology have led to the identification of several protein/peptides with specific affinity to solid materials. The integration of enzymes with these material-binding proteins/peptides is a promising approach for the development of new and improved biocatalytic systems. Here, we discuss recent technologies being developed in our labs that rely on material-binding proteins/peptides to promote the directed assembly of enzymes to material interfaces, as well as the application of these technologies towards food and agriculture.
