Global warming is an alarming issue for human civilization. Worldwide measures should be taken to preserve sustainability and human health. Accordingly, environmentally benign chemical conversions are encouraged, in both academia and industry. On the other hand, benzimidazole and 1,2-disustituted benzimidazole pharmacophores are present in many commercial drugs and medicinally privileged molecules. As a part of our ongoing research to develop greener routes targeted to the synthesis of novel pharmacophores, ultrasound-assisted greener methodology has been developed to synthesize benzimidazoles and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles concomitantly. No hazardous solvent/catalyst/solid support was used to complete the reaction. Spectroscopic studies (FT-IR, NMR and HRMS) were carried out to elucidate the structures and in few cases, X-ray crystallographic analysis was also performed. This one-pot procedure successfully satisfies many requirements of green chemistry. Excellent overall conversion, shorter reaction time, preservation of atom-economy, easy work-up procedure, clean reaction technique are few fundamental features of this method.
