Methylmercaptan (MM) is one of bad smell gases and biomarker of teeth diseases such as periodontal disease. Therefore, detection of this gas at several ppb is challenging for environmental monitoring and care of human breath. There are various methods and sensors to detect this gas such as chemiresistive sensor, gas chromatography and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. In these methods, QCM sensor is mass sensor to measure mass of adsorbed gas at nanogram and have high sensitivity with sensing film. In previous study, we proposed QCM sensor with sensing film of layered manganese oxide nanosheets to detect MM. Conversely, it was reported to exfoliate layered manganese oxide nanosheets by the intercalation of bulky ion such as tetrabutylammonium ion. Here, we proposed quartz crystal microbalance sensor with sensing film of manganese oxide monolayer by electrophoretic deposition of exfoliated manganese oxide nanosheets for high sensitive detection of MM at low concentration (Figure 1(a)). Fabricated sensing film coated for 60 minutes responded to 500 ppb MM (Figure 1 (b)). In general, morphology and film thickness can be controlled by applied voltage, deposition time and concentration of solution with nanoparticles. Therefore, sensing film coated for 10 minutes did not respond to MM because manganese oxide was not almost formed on QCM. Moreover, in this study, the sensing characteristics of sensing film coated with exfoliated manganese oxide nanosheets were compared and discussed.
