Methyl mercaptan (MM) is contained in human breath and it is possible to make a diagnosis of periodontal disease early by measuring this concentration. However, MM concentration in human breath is very low as several ppb. Therefore, development of a highly sensitive gas sensor for MM is required. In a previous study, it was reported to detect 20 ppb MM by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor using layered manganese oxide nanosheets containing sodium ions between layers (NaMnO2) as a sensitive film. In the report, this QCM sensor measure the mass of new sulfur compounds generated by oxidation of MM on the surface of NaMnO2. However, it is required to measure at a lower concentration as several ppb. In this study, protonic layered manganese oxide nanosheets (HMnO2) was prepared from NaMnO2 by ion exchange reaction of sodium ion and proton, and was coated a sensitive film on the QCM for application to highly sensitive gas sensor for MM. HMnO2 had layered crystal structure. As a result of the adsorption characteristics of MM of the prepared sensitive film, HMnO2 showed a larger response than NaMnO2 to 20 ppb MM (Figure 1) because HMnO2 has higher surface area and higher oxidation state than NaMnO2. In the future, fabricated sensor will be applied for self-diagnosis of the human breath.
