Structure-based searches may often yield differing numbers and quality of answers in different databases, even when the utmost care is taken to eliminate factors such as patent country coverage or structure drawing conventions. The underlying cause is often attributable to differences in database indexing policies. This can often lead to variation in the retrievability of a given patent record. A short study with examples will show how the indexing policies of a range of commercial and free databases can impact whether a relevant piece of prior art is retrieved or not. This will underline the need to search more than one source of chemical structure data, in order to improve recall and avoid missing prior disclosure of chemical compounds.
