The water circuit in the environment has implications in both the availability of clean water sources for human consumption, as well as for normal functioning of natural ecosystems. Human activity, such as industrial or agricultural processes, intervenes in this circuit and can greatly affect the quality of water resources. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)-containing compounds are essential for plant and animal nutrition. The phosphorus cycle is a slow process with implications in crops and animal growth. While phosphorus resources may be limited in certain regions, excessive presence from industrial and agricultural uses can cause algal blooms that produce extremely dangerous toxins, which are a health threat to people or animals. Managing and controlling the P-cycle is essential for ensuring an overall nutrient balance and achieving equilibrium between beneficial and harmful effects. This presentation will describe development and optimization of nanoscale materials and devices for the removal and detection of phosphorous-containing compounds in environmental water samples. This method provides a field-deployable alternative to conventionally used approaches for detection, real time monitoring and control of P-containing species for food and agricultural production.
