Complex oxides such as LiCoO2 and the LixNiyMnzCo(1-y-z)O2 ("NMC") family of lithium intercalation compounds represent an emerging class of nanomaterials whose use in energy storage for consumer electronics and electric vehicles is increasing rapidly. Here, we report on the interactions and transformations of complex oxide nanomaterials under conditions relevant for understanding and predicting their biological impact under conditions mimicing those found in natural environments. We will present recent results aimed at understanding how factors such as size, shape, crystallinity, and chemical composition of these nanomaterials influence the transformations and resulting physicochemical properties and biological impact. Potential strategies for mitigating adverse biological impact through redesign of nanoparticle morphology and composition will be discussed.
