For many specialist and non-specialist readers, the media – rather than research literature – is the place where science is discovered, proliferated and debated. Science magazines and websites have very different business models and editorial practices to journals and other scholarly sources. With no manuscript submission or peer review processes, it is editors who decide which research is ‘news worthy’ and how it should be communicated to the reader. This session goes behind the scenes of Chemistry World, one of the largest chemistry magazines in the world, to understand how editors make decisions, what researchers (and journalists) can do to improve their chances of getting a story published, and reveals the choices that editors make on a daily basis which ultimately influence the way science is communicated and perceived by the reading public.<br/>
