What does it mean to 'edit a journal'? Perhaps the question should be rephrased as "What does it mean to lead a journal, as the editor?" All peer-reviewed science passes under the nose of an editor multiple times, and thus the key gatekeeper for all reliable and trustworthy science is this person. The responsibility of an editor is immense, but today in 2018, many ACS editors have taken on far more of a role than curation of peer review and editing, in the strict definition of the term. Editors such as Paul Weiss of <i>ACS Nano </i>have truly taken the lead of their journals, and have formed and shaped them into remarkable centers of science, and just as importantly, of centers of community. Through deep consideration of fairness and by establishing connections with each and every individual author, the sense of community runs deep. Instead of waiting for papers to arrive with a 'ping' in an email box, these editors are reaching out to researchers, listening to authors and sensing the latest trends, and helping educate authors and young researchers before they submit their papers. Since ACS editors are themselves authors, they are closely integrated with their communities, and thus editors like Paul Weiss are remarkable examples of scientific communicators, in every sense.
