Early transition metal carbide and nitride supported metal catalysts are active and selective for a variety of reactions ranging from the hydrogen evolution reaction to the water gas shift reaction to CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation. Their synthesis has a very dramatic effect on catalytic properties of the resulting materials. In this presentation we will describe the genesis of carbide and nitride supported catalysts with a focus on the use of operando methods to characterize interactions between the metal precursors and supports, and the chemistry of key intermediates during catalysis.
