Tracking surface chemistry of a catalyst during catalysis is significant for fundamental understanding of heterogeneous catalysis since it allows for establishing an intrinsic correlation between surface chemistry of a catalyst during catalysis and the corresponding catalytic performance. Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy can be used for in-situ studies of surfaces of different materials or devices at certain temperature in a gas phase at certain pressure. To simulate the gaseous environment of a catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor, a flowing gaseous environment of reactants around the catalyst is necessary. Here I will present how we designed different types of reaction cells which allow for studying surface of a catalyst in gas phase from Torr pressure to atmosphere pressure. The instrumentation of heating a catalyst up to 850C in near ambient pressure gas phase with infrared laser will be discussed. We will present the visualization of a catalyst facing to aperture with a distance shorter than 0.1 mm. Example of studies of catalysts at high temperature up to 850C in a gas phase will be presented and discussed.
