The goal of isolating coordination complexes with specific or variable molecular shapes and physical properties by enabling non-covalent interactions in the crystals in which those molecules are isolated, has received less attention than has the opposite task of using molecules with defined topologies to create crystals possessing desired qualities. In the present work the ligand orotate was used in the formation of four different heterometallic 3d - 4f complexes beginning with the same set of starting materials in all cases. A generous coverage with functional groups endows the orotate fragment with many and varied possibilities for participating in covalent and non-covalent interactions in crystals; this characteristic has been used effectively in prior studies of stereochemical control, phase transitions and proton conduction. In the present study, a stable structural fragment, the monoanionic CoIII complex [Co(orot)2(bipy)](-), is used as a metalloligand in reactions with LnCl3●6H2O (Ln = Gd, Dy; H2orot = orotic acid, C5H3N2O4, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, C10H8N2). The versatility of the [Co(orot)2(bipy)](-), fragment in enabling the preparation of multiple isolable products with different lanthanoid environments will be discussed, as will the challenges in isolating pure products from multiple-product reactions.
