The controlled ring-opening copolymerization (ROcoP) of enantiopure lactide (L-LA or D-LA) with achiral functionalized 8-membered-N-cyclic carbonates (8NCR)s was realized via a judicious choice of a simple and cost-effective organocatalytic system which led to the synthesis of random copolymers. The targeted level of carbonate incorporation into the chiral polyester chain was achieved by simply adjusting the co-monomer’s loading. Reactivity ratio studies, kinetics analyses, detailed 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy, SEC and MALDI-ToF MS analyses were used to fully characterize the microstructure and sequence of the copolymers. The polymerization rate of the carbonates was not affected by their pendant functionality enabling the preparation of a variety of structures which were further functionalized employing various click chemistry techniques. Copolymers of with an enriched lactidyl block content exhibited stereocomplexation behaviour when blended with either the enantiopure PLA of opposite chirality or with copolymers consisting of lactidyl units of opposite chirality. These transitions were thoroughly studied via Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC).
