Sea buckthorn is a thorny nitrogen fixing deciduous shrub, native to Europe and Asia. Its leaf is recognized as herbal tea. Little is known about the leaf's pharmacological activities. Our present study was carried out to investigate the in vitro antioxidant, cellular antioxidant (CAA), antiproliferative and anti-inflammatory activities of phytochemicals in leaf. Furthermore, phenolic and flavonoid compounds were identified and quantified in free and bound fraction. According to our research, quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin glycosides were observed in high concentration in free phytochemicals, while aglycones, catechins and phenolic acids were found mainly in bound form. The in intro antioxidant activity was correlated with total phenolics. By contrast, CAA and antiproliferative activities were relatively associated with bound phytochemical part. In addition, the flavonoid-glycosides contributed most to the anti-inflammatory efficiency. Thus, our findings suggest comprehensive utilization potential of sea buckthorn leaf as novelty nutraceuticals with abundant bioactivities.
