Nanostructures of ligands are designed and produced using advanced nanolithography methods, and used toward investigation and regulation of cellular signaling processes. The cellular responses are monitored at single cell level using combined atomic force and laser scanning confocal microscopy, as well as cellular mechanics. This presentation will provide specific examples to demonstrate the concept that ligands with designed chemical functionality and accurate special arrangement at nanometer level are essential for initiation and impacting designated cellular signaling cascades, such as activation of mast cells, dendritic cells, and cellular migration and communication. The exquisite control over cellular local environment using nanoengineering approaches provides a new and alternative means to investigate and reveal molecular level insights regarding cellular biochemistry and behavior. The information provides an important guide towards cellular based technologies including tissue engineering, wound healing and immuno based therapy.
